Amaravati is situated in Sattenapalli Taluk of Guntur District and it is famous as the seat of a temple to Lord Shiva worshipped here as Lord 'Amareswara' and also for the Buddhist sculptures, which are world famous. 'Amareswaram' is considered sacred because of three things, the Krishna River, an important Kshetra with a 'Sthalamahatyam' and the Sri Mahalinga Murthy, which are three sacred principles embodied in one.
The Legends Of Amareswara Temple
The lofty temple of Amareswara is situated at a spot on the river Krishna where it takes a north-to- south course, while the main river flows from west to east. There is a legend that even if the river Krishna flows in floods nothing will happen to that mountain and that the river will have to take some other side to flow. Hence it is that the river Krishna flows north to south at this place. Such spots where the river takes a different course for short distance are considered to be very holy places, where temples are normally built.
There is one legend that the temple was originally Buddhist in origin and later on this was readapted for Hindu worship. There is some force in this contention, since in the 'Amareswara Swami' temple the foundations are laid with the characteristic Buddhist slabs only. Just above the 'Mula Virat' in the Garbhagriha, one can see still a white marble lotus Medallion, done in the delicate and ornate style of the early Buddhist 'Silpas'. The Mula Virat is a long vertical cylinder made of white marble, which is so extensively used in the Buddhist monuments.
This ancient temple dedicated to Shiva enshrines a 15ft high white marble Shiva Lingam, and is surrounded on all the four sides by towering gopuras of the usual Dravidian type of temple Architecture. The 'Vimana' of the temple also shows the same style of architecture.
Situated at a particularly sacred spot of the holy river Krishna and a consecrated place of worship, it is of importance to both Buddhism and Hinduism. Any account of Amaravati will not be complete without reference to the world famous Buddha stupa here.
Festivals in Amaravati
The main festivals in the temple are the Maha Shivaratri, which comes in the 'Magha Bahula Dasami' and the Navaratri and the 'Kalyana Utsavas'.
Places to stay in Amaravati
Accommodation is available in the Rest House, Hotel Mamta and Swapna Lodge at Amaravati. There are also a Public Works Department Travellers Bungalow, some choultries and sheds for pilgrims' to stay.
How to Get There
Road : Amaravati is situated twenty miles northwest of Guntur and is connected with it by a good motorable road. Taxis and buses are available from Guntur. The nearest railheads are Guntur and Vijayawada. There are good bus connections from Guntur to Amaravati.

Said to be the richest temple in the world, this temple is a vibrant cultural and philanthropic institution with a grand history spanning several centuries. It attracts pilgrims from all over the country who stand in line for hours together to obtain a glimpse of the presiding deity for a few fleeting seconds.

Devotees offer their gifts and donations in the "Hundi", which is the main source of income.

The temple at Tirumala is believed to have existed from ancient times. The outermost enclosure contains the 'Dhvajastambha' or the banner post and, among others, the statues of Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya and his consorts, and of Todarmal, the minister of Akbar. The idol of the deity, the full figure of Lord Venkateswara or 'Venkataramana' or 'Srinivasa' or 'Balaji' (as is called in various parts of the country) has the attributes of both Vishnu and Shiva, preserving and destroying aspects of the Hindu Trinity.

Chennai - The Gateway To The South
Popularly regarded as "The Gateway to the South", Chennai is the fourth largest city in India and the capital of Tamil Nadu state. With a vast population of about six million people, Chennai is a city that is growing, expanding and changing vigorously.
The History Of The City
Modern Chennai grew out of a small village when in 1639 a fishing hamlet called "Madraspatnam" was selected by early English merchants of the East India Company as a site for the settlement.
Chennai was the first British major settlement in India and it was here that many who went on to build the Empire first learnt their trade. As a consequence, the city is replete with much that is of significance in British Indian history. But the much older settlements have stories to tell too, and so the city is an amalgam of ancient and more modern history. Everywhere one goes in Chennai, one can find history written in every name.
The City Of Chennai
Chennai, previously called Madras, is comparatively a new city, about 350 years old. The erstwhile villages of Mylapore, Triplicane, Ezhambur (Egmore), etc., all now a part of Chennai, have a recorded historical past centuries older than Chennai.
Chennai is a gracious city that has a clear skyline, long sandy beaches, parks, historic landmarks and tourist infrastructural facilities which make it a convenient entry point or base to start a tour of Tamil Nadu and South India.
Music, dance and all other art forms of South India are cherished and nurtured in this city. Although the city has long been an important center of textile manufacturing, a great deal of industrial expansion has taken place in recent years.
It's Location
Chennai has the Bay of Bengal bordering its east, while the state of Andhra Pradesh is on its northwest. It has the Kanchipuram on its south and the states of Kerala and Karnataka on its western side.
The Growth Of Chennai
For more than 2000 years the area has been popular with seafarers, spice traders and cloth merchants. The 16th century saw the arrival of the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch. In 1693, the British East India Company established a settlement in the fishing village of Madraspatnam. For St. George was constructed over a period of 15 years and finally completed in 1653. George town grew in the area of the fort and was granted its first municipal charter in 1688 by James II, making it the oldest municipality in India. During the 18th and 19th centuries, French and British traders competed for supremacy in India. In the 19th century, the city became the seat of the Madras presidency, one of the four divisions of British imperial India. After independence, it continued to grow into what is now a significant southern gateway.
Centre Of South India's Film Industry
Chennai is the centre of South India's film industry; its skyline is ablaze with bright movie billboards advertising the latest celluloid fantasies. There are many big film studios.
The Traditional And Modern Outlook Of Chennai
It presents a culture that is distinct from that of the northern part of India and is famous for its traditional yet modern outlook. Chennai is a city where the traditional and the modern blend in life everywhere. From traditional vegetarian fare to fast foods, from nine-yard saris to the latest in fashion, from ancient temple architecture to modern high-rise - with Indo-Saracenic and Victorian as stops along the way - from classical music and dance to discos throbbing to heady beats, Chennai has them all and many more vivid contrasts that are a pleasant surprise.
Climate
Being situated at the tropical zone, Chennai normally has a very hot and humid climate. The best time to visit this city is the winter season. Winter and summer temperature does not vary much as it rains frequently through the year.

Though first house was built in 1840, the first metalled roads were laid only in the early 20th century. The cool climate attracted Christian missionaries and they established the Sacred Heart Convent for girls and Montfort School for boys. Schools like the Holy Cross Novitiate House, started by the Brothers of Don Bosco, followed these.

Nagarahole is situated in the picturesque districts of Kodagu and Mysore in southern Karnataka. The Nagarahole National Park was first set up in 1955. In 1975 its area was increased to include a greater expanse of forest reserve.
The Wild Population of Nagarhole National Park
The forest is home to animals like the four-horned antelope, sloth bear, jungle cat, civet, spotted deer, elephant, wild dog, flying fox, tiger, panther, gaur (Indian bison), sambhar, wild boar, black-naped hare, bonnet macaque, and pangolin.
Cobras, crocodiles, kraits, pythons, vipers, and several species of lizards are also found here. Among the 250 bird species found here, the prominent ones are the common babbler, bee-eater, bulbul, dove, crested serpent, hornbill, Malabar pied, alexandrine, peacock, woodpecker, warbler, great Indian reed, eagle, crested hawk, golden-back parakeet, and the southern tree pie.
Nagarhole is worth visiting at the height of the dry season, when wild animals can be spotted in large numbers near sources of water.
Viewing The Wild
At Nagarhole, there are excellent facilities for viewing wildlife and large groups of gaur, elephant, sambar, chital and even the occasional tiger or leopard are seen. Vehicles and guides are available to take you around the Nagarhole National Park.
If this natural heaven awakens the 'spirit of adventure' in you then consider heading for the Brahmagiri Mountains-an inviting destination for those who wish to go trekking. Prior permission is required from the authorities before embarking on a trekking trail.
